Sam John is Associate Professor in Neural Engineering at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, The University of Melbourne. He has a passion for translation of medical technology from the laboratory to real world application.
His primary research involves developing next generation implantable neural prostheses that interact with the nervous system. Dr. John’s research draws from his background in medical electronics, electrical and electronic engineering and neuroscience. He was part of the original team that developed the Stentrode technology at the University of Melbourne who were awarded the 2019 Eureka Prize for interdisciplinary research. He has previously worked as the Lead Software developer at Synchron Australia, which aims to commercialise a minimally invasive Brain Machine Interface. He also has honorary appointments at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health.
